Semi-Truck Fire Containing Hazardous Materials Shuts Down I-40 Westbound in West Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A section of Interstate 40 westbound near White Bridge Pike in West Nashville has been reopened after a semi-truck carrying hazardous materials caught fire on Monday, Feb. 5.
According to the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT), the fire was reported shortly after 2:15 p.m. TDOT officials quickly activated the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency and hazardous materials units from the Nashville Fire Department to respond to the scene.
Following the incident, all westbound lanes were temporarily closed to allow authorities to extinguish the fire and clear the roadway. The Nashville Fire Department reported that their teams effectively mitigated the immediate threat. They further confirmed that the product involved in the incident was a low grade radioactive waste, which remained isolated within its packaging.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the incident. The swift response from emergency agencies ensured the safety of both motorists and personnel present at the scene. After conducting thorough assessments and ensuring that all risks were addressed, I-40 westbound was eventually reopened to normal traffic flow.
