In a second aircraft accident in as many weeks, two planes collided on a snow-covered tarmac at New Chitose Airport in Japan. The incident occurred when a Korean Air Lines flight clipped the wing of a parked Cathay Pacific Airways plane amid wintry weather conditions.
According to a Korean Air official, the collision took place as the Korean Air Flight 766, bound for Seoul, South Korea, was preparing for takeoff. At the time of the incident, the plane was carrying 289 passengers and crew members. However, there were conflicting reports regarding the presence of passengers on the Cathay Pacific plane, with some Japanese media outlets indicating that it was empty.
Thankfully, there were no reported injuries on either aircraft, and there were no signs of fire or fuel leaks, as confirmed by a spokesperson from the fire department. The collision occurred when a towing car, pushing the Korean Air plane backwards towards the runway, slipped on the snowy surface, causing the jet's left wing to collide with the right tail wing of the Cathay Pacific plane.
The extent of the damage to the aircraft is not yet known, and it remains unclear what exactly led to the incident. Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
This incident comes just two weeks after a tragic crash at Tokyo's Haneda Airport, where a Japan Airlines flight erupted into flames after colliding with a coast guard plane. The crash claimed the lives of five out of the six crew members on board the smaller military aircraft. The investigation into the Tokyo airport collision is ongoing, with authorities examining communications between air traffic controllers and the two planes involved.
Due to the bad weather conditions, more than 80 domestic and international flights departing from or arriving at New Chitose Airport had to be canceled on Tuesday, according to an airport spokesperson.
As aviation authorities work to determine the cause of this recent collision, safety measures and precautions during wintry conditions are likely to come under scrutiny to prevent similar incidents in the future.
