In a tragic turn of events, a second drill sergeant has been discovered deceased at Fort Jackson in South Carolina, as announced by the U.S. Army on Monday. Staff Sgt. Zachary L. Melton, aged 30, was found unresponsive inside his vehicle on the military base on Saturday. Melton served as a drill sergeant with the 1st Battalion, 34th Infantry Regiment. His absence was noticed by unit personnel when he failed to report for work.

Fort Jackson's commander, Brig. Gen. Jason Kelly, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Staff Sgt. Melton and extended condolences to his family and fellow soldiers of the Always Forward battalion during this emotionally challenging time. The cause of Melton's death has not yet been disclosed, but the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division is currently conducting an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Following this unfortunate incident, military chaplains and behavioral health personnel have been deployed to provide support to members of the affected unit. Mental well-being and emotional support are paramount during such trying times, and these professionals will ensure that necessary assistance is available to anyone who may require it.

Shockingly, this marks the second drill sergeant found deceased at Fort Jackson in less than two weeks. Just prior to Melton's tragic passing, 34-year-old Staff Sgt. Though there were no initial signs of foul play in Burtram's case, an investigation is underway to determine the cause of his untimely demise.

These consecutive losses of dedicated drill sergeants within such a short span of time have undoubtedly left the Fort Jackson community in deep mourning. The Army is working diligently to provide support and investigate these tragic incidents, as it strives to ensure the well-being and safety of its personnel.

It is a solemn reminder of the sacrifices and challenges faced by military servicemen and women, highlighting the importance of mental health support and fostering a supportive environment within the armed forces. The U.S. Army will continue to prioritize the well-being of its soldiers and hold investigations to uncover the truth behind these tragic events.
