In a highly anticipated election, Salvadorans are casting their votes on Sunday, with the outcome widely expected to grant Nayib Bukele, the self-proclaimed "world's coolest dictator," a second term as president. Despite the constitutional prohibition on reelection, Bukele's supporters have largely dismissed these concerns, fueled by his popularity and his hardline stance against gang violence.
Under Bukele's administration, a massive crackdown on gangs has resulted in the arrest of over 76,000 individuals in a span of almost two years. While crime rates have significantly dropped, and citizens have regained control of their neighborhoods, there have been criticisms of the arrests due to a perceived lack of due process.
Notably, the traditional political parties in El Salvador, both from the left and right, that once dominated the political landscape are now in disarray. The conservative Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA) and the leftist Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN) find themselves polling in single digits, unable to challenge Bukele's popularity.
Bukele's reputation has been built on his uncompromising approach to tackling gang violence, leading to the arrest of more than 1% of the country's population. While his administration has been accused of human rights abuses, the decline in violence has transformed El Salvador from one of the world's most dangerous countries just a few years ago.
Despite concerns over the concentration of power and undemocratic measures taken by Bukele, many voters have overlooked these issues, attributing them to the successful crackdown on gangs. Bukele, who made no public campaign appearances, relied heavily on social media and television ads to convey the message that the relentless fight against gangs hinges on the victory of his New Ideas party.
As the election takes place, Salvadorans will determine the continuation of Bukele's presidency, weighing the achievements in reducing crime against concerns about democratic principles and checks and balances. The results of this election will undoubtedly shape the future of El Salvador and its political landscape for the coming years.
