Nov 18 - Igor Girkin, a Russian nationalist in custody and awaiting trial on charges of inciting extremism, has shocked the nation by nominating himself for the upcoming presidential elections in 2024. The announcement was made on his behalf during a news conference, according to online news channel SOTA.
Girkin, also known as Igor Strelkov, gained prominence as a military commander and has been a vocal Kremlin critic. From his detention in August, he expressed his belief that he would make a better president than Vladimir Putin, whom he humorously referred to as "too kind." Despite his ironic tone, Girkin is seen as an unlikely contender for the presidency.
During the news conference, a letter from Girkin was read by Oleg Nelzin, who is identified as the co-chair of a group called Russian Movement for Strelkov. In the letter, Girkin instructed his followers to establish a campaign headquarters and begin collecting signatures for his candidacy.
Girkin's supporters previously stated in September that his criminal investigation had been extended until December 18. He had lost an appeal against pre-trial detention in August, further impacting his chances of running for the presidency.
Although there has been speculation about Putin's potential candidacy for the 2024 elections, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has repeatedly stated that Putin enjoys unprecedented support and would likely secure an overwhelming majority if he were to run.
The nomination of Girkin, particularly given his controversial background, has sparked both curiosity and skepticism among political observers. As the campaign season approaches, it remains to be seen how Girkin's announcement may impact the political landscape in Russia and the viability of his presidential aspirations.
The 2024 presidential elections in Russia are poised to be an intriguing contest, with Girkin's unexpected bid adding a new element to the political narrative.
