In a devastating attack, seven people, including three children, were killed in a Russian drone strike on the city of Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city. The incident occurred overnight, causing widespread destruction and loss of life.
According to Kharkiv region governor Oleh Syniehubov, the attack involved at least 10 drones, out of which eight were successfully shot down. The Nemyshlyan district of the city bore the brunt of the strike, with civilian infrastructure sustaining significant damage. The attack resulted in a massive fire that engulfed and destroyed 15 private houses.
The tragic consequences of the attack were made evident by the account of Serhii Bolvinov, head of the investigative department of the National Police. He described one resident witnessing "a true hell," where the fuel leaked, causing an inferno that trapped and burned alive a family of five, including children aged 7, 4, and nine months. In another house that was consumed by the blaze, two adults lost their lives.
Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko reported that over 50 people were successfully evacuated, and emergency workers contained the fire by Saturday morning. However, the devastation left behind is a stark reminder of the cruelty and destruction caused by such acts of terror.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, emphasizing that "terror can't remain unpunished." He called for accountability, stating that Russia must be held responsible for the lives it has ruined and destroyed.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian air force defended against the attack, successfully destroying 23 out of 31 Iranian Shahed drones launched by Russia. The northeastern region of Kharkiv and the southern province of Odesa were the primary targets of the drone attacks. Odesa regional governor Oleh Kiper reported that four people were injured in the city due to the strikes.
The attack unfolded in three waves, with the initial wave aiming at Odesa's regional capital, resulting in the destruction of all nine drones. However, the debris damaged port infrastructure and caused one injury. The second and third waves targeted the port infrastructure in the Danube river area, resulting in the destruction of 12 drones and three injuries.
The neighboring country of Romania also faced the consequences of the attack, with Russia targeting Ukraine's river ports of Ismail and Reni, near the border. Romania's Ministry of National Defense confirmed the attacks and deployed a Turkish Air Force F-16 jet for reconnaissance missions to monitor the situation.
Russian Defense Ministry, on the other hand, accused Ukraine of targeting their civilian transport vessels in the Black Sea with sea drones. While one drone was destroyed and others were reportedly jammed, there was no immediate comment from Ukrainian officials regarding this alleged attack.
These recent events serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing tensions between Ukraine and Russia, highlighting the devastating consequences of their escalating conflict. The international community continues to closely monitor the situation, as the search for a resolution becomes increasingly urgent.
