In a shocking escalation of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, the Ukrainian authorities reported that Russia launched a devastating attack with 41 missiles of various types on Tuesday. The attack resulted in casualties and extensive damages in the Ukrainian cities of Kyiv and Kharkiv.
According to Valery Zaluzhny, the commander-in-chief of Ukraine's armed forces, Ukrainian air defense forces managed to successfully intercept and shoot down 21 missiles, including five Iskander-Ms, which are known to be highly challenging to intercept. Zaluzhny highlighted that not all missiles on a ballistic trajectory were able to reach their intended targets.
In Kyiv, the country's capital, the consequences of the attack were deeply felt. Serhiy Popko, head of the Kyiv regional military administration, confirmed that one person lost their life, while 22 individuals sustained injuries and 13 were hospitalized. Additionally, several buildings suffered damage across three districts of the city.
Popko revealed the sequence of the attack, stating that the enemy initially launched cruise missiles from Tu-95MS strategic bombers originating from the Saratov Region, Russia. These missiles entered Kyiv in two waves. Subsequently, land-based ballistic missiles were fired towards the capital. Despite the successful interception by Ukrainian air defense forces, debris from the missiles caused casualties and destruction.
In the city of Kharkiv, located in eastern Ukraine, the situation was equally dire. Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported that five people lost their lives and more than 48 individuals were injured as a result of the attack. One section of a residential building was completely demolished, leaving people trapped under the debris.
Kharkiv regional Governor Oleh Synehubov provided further details on the attack, stating that Russians launched 12 combined attacks on several residential districts of Kharkiv. The assailants employed S-300, X-32, and Iskander-M ballistic missiles during the assault. The aftermath left 30 residential buildings damaged, with approximately a thousand windows shattered amidst freezing weather conditions (-7°C).
Local authorities in both Kyiv and Kharkiv have pledged assistance to those affected by the attack, promising shelter to those who have lost their homes. The situation remains tense as the international community closely monitors the developments in the region.
As tensions continue to escalate, the consequences of this Russian attack represent a grave violation of international norms and a threat to regional stability. The Ukrainian government and its allies are expected to respond firmly as they seek to protect the security and well-being of their citizens.
