In a renewed offensive in eastern Ukraine, Russia's relentless efforts to capture the city of Avdiivka have resulted in mounting military losses, similar to the catastrophic battle for Bakhmut, war experts say. Avdiivka, one of the most intensely contested areas on the front line, has witnessed particularly heavy casualties for Russian forces.

Military analysts draw parallels between Russia's strategy for Avdiivka and its tactics in Bakhmut. Intent on pinching off a Ukrainian salient, Moscow has repeatedly attempted this classic military maneuver seen during the latter days of World War II. However, George Barros, a Russia analyst, highlights that Russia is employing a similar but unsuccessful strategy in Avdiivka, characterized by brutal attacks and a tremendous amount of combat power, dubbing it a "throwing good money after bad" approach.

Combat footage from the area around Avdiivka reveals destroyed armor, indicative of the heavy losses suffered by Moscow during the ongoing fighting. Lack of coordination and preparation by military leadership, coupled with unrelenting Ukrainian artillery attacks, have contributed to the situation. Reports suggest that in just three weeks, Russia has lost more vehicles in Avdiivka than Ukraine lost during several months of intense fighting in the south.

Ukraine's commander-in-chief, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, stated that in the month since Russia launched its offensive, their armed forces have lost over 100 tanks, 250 other armored vehicles, 50 artillery systems, seven warplanes, and suffered around 10,000 casualties. However, these figures are yet to be independently verified.

Despite the similarities to the battle of Bakhmut, Avdiivka differs in several ways. It has long been heavily fortified by Ukraine due to its historical role as a strongpoint in the fighting against Russia-backed separatists. Additionally, Avdiivka is strategically significant as it is located near Donetsk, a region currently under Moscow's control. Its proximity to Donetsk allows Ukraine to maintain a forward presence for planning future operations.

While the motivations for Russia to capture Avdiivka are not entirely clear, some speculate that Russian President Vladimir Putin may be seeking a political victory ahead of the country's upcoming presidential elections next year.

As the battle for Avdiivka rages on, Ukrainian military updates indicate that Russian forces continue to conduct failed assault operations. This ongoing effort suggests that the offensive in Avdiivka marks a shift in the war and the culmination of the counteroffensive. Military experts believe that these offensives cannot be sustained indefinitely and that the current fighting for the city signifies another phase in the 21-month-long conflict.

In the face of Russia's relentless push, Ukraine remains steadfast, defending Avdiivka and holding strong against their aggressor.
