RICHMOND, Va. -- On Monday, Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney officially confirmed his candidacy for Governor of Virginia, entering the race alongside Virginia Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger. Stoney's announcement comes nearly a month after rumors emerged that he was considering a gubernatorial run, as reported by Politico.

Mayor Stoney's campaign focuses on his track record of achievements in Richmond, emphasizing the improvements he has made to the city. His team highlighted his efforts in allocating historic funding for road improvements, reducing the poverty rate by 22%, bringing the budget under control with a surplus, and constructing new schools.

The Richmond mayor joins an already competitive race, as Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger announced her plans to run for Governor in November, foregoing a bid for re-election to the U.S. House. Spanberger, who has won major races across different parts of the state, is considered by political analyst Dr. Bob Holsworth to be the initial favorite in the Democratic primary.

However, Holsworth also noted that the race is still far from over, with the election being a long way off. As an underdog, Stoney's direct appeal to Democrats in his campaign announcement could provide him with an advantage in the primary. His criticism of Glenn Younkin, a notable move in a Democratic primary, sets him apart from his opponent.
