In a shocking incident that unfolded in Panama, a retired lawyer, Kenneth Darlington, 77, has been arrested after allegedly shooting dead two environmental protestors who were blocking a road. The incident took place in broad daylight as Darlington, who was stuck in traffic due to the demonstration, opened fire on the climate activists.
Protestors have been gathering in opposition to a controversial mining contract, causing ongoing disruptions on the Pan-American Highway in Chame for approximately three weeks. This demonstration has drawn attention and caused frustration among commuters and local residents.
Disturbing footage shared widely on social media captured the incident as Darlington calmly exited his vehicle and approached the protestors. Witnesses reported that he demanded the group move out of the road before retrieving a handgun from his pocket. The elderly pensioner was seen brandishing the weapon while clearing the road of obstructions, with TV crews and photographers capturing the shocking scenes.
According to witnesses, protestors confronted Darlington with questions about his intentions, asking if he planned to hurt anyone. Allegedly, Darlington chillingly replied, "You want to be the first?" He then proceeded to open fire on the demonstrators, tragically taking the lives of two teachers. The first victim, Abdiel Diaz, was fatally struck by a bullet while holding a Panama flag. Another teacher, Ivan Rodriguez, was shot in the shoulder when he confronted Darlington.
Following the shooting, Darlington began removing tree trunks that were blocking the road before attempting to walk away. However, he was swiftly apprehended by the police at the scene. Darlington's girlfriend reportedly told him, "we are not leaving," as he nonchalantly climbed back into the car.
During his court appearance in La Espiga, Darlington was charged with murder and illegal possession of a firearm, according to Eliecer Plicett, the lawyer representing the victims. It has been reported by local media that the retired lawyer had a previous conviction for illegal possession of a firearm.
Despite the gravity of his alleged actions, there is a possibility that Darlington may not receive jail time due to his age. Instead, he could be placed under house arrest. This outcome has raised concerns among the public, as the severity of the crime warrants appropriate punishment.
The incident has sparked outrage among the public, with demands for justice and stricter gun control regulations. The tragic loss of life has further ignited discussions around the necessity of peaceful protests, as incidents like these highlight the potential risks and consequences.
Authorities are now investigating the motive behind the shooting and working to provide support to the families of the victims. As the case progresses, the nation awaits the legal proceedings that will determine the fate of Kenneth Darlington.
