Washington, Nov 4 (Reuters) - U.S. Representative Rashida Tlaib, the first Palestinian-American woman to serve in Congress, has accused President Joe Biden of supporting a "genocide" against Palestinians and warned of repercussions in next year's election.

In a video posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, late on Friday, the Democratic Congresswoman from Michigan repeated her calls for Biden to back a ceasefire in the almost month-long Israel-Hamas conflict.

"Joe Biden supported the genocide of the Palestinian people," Tlaib said in the video clip, which showed images of the dead and wounded from bombings in Gaza, pro-Palestinian demonstrations across the United States, Biden declaring support for Israel, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanking the U.S. president.

Tlaib's accusations come amidst escalating tensions in the region, with the Israeli military launching an air, artillery, and ground offensive against the Hamas-run Gaza Strip. Palestinian authorities report that more than 9,400 people have been killed in the conflict. While Washington has expressed concern over civilian deaths and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, it has maintained robust military and political support for Israel.

"The American people will not forget. Biden, support ceasefire now or don't count on us in 2024," Tlaib warned. "Mr. President, the American people are not with you on this one. We will remember in 2024."

The White House National Security Council spokesperson responded to Tlaib's claims by stating, "What we do not support are calls for Israel to stop defending itself from Hamas terrorists, which is what a permanent ceasefire would be."

Tensions in the region have caught the attention of the United Nations as well. On Thursday, a group of seven independent UN experts warned that Palestinians in Gaza are at "grave risk of genocide" and time is running out for them.

Israel, on the other hand, argues that it is specifically targeting Hamas militants and not civilians. The Israeli mission to the UN in Geneva called the UN experts' comments "deplorable and deeply concerning" and held Hamas responsible for civilian deaths.

While the accusation of genocide carries significant weight, it is important to note that the International Criminal Court defines genocide as the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group through killing, preventing births, or forcibly transferring children from one group to another.

As the conflict in the region persists, it remains to be seen how these accusations will impact the relationship between the United States, Israel, and the Palestinian people. The 2024 election will serve as a benchmark for whether the American people support Biden's approach to the Israel-Hamas conflict or not.
