In a recent statement, Florida Representative Matt Gaetz declared that he will do "everything possible" to prevent the empowering of Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry. Gaetz, an outspoken Republican, expressed his opposition to the notion of a "Speaker Light" and argued that it is a constitutional desecration to not elect a Speaker of the House.

The clip of Gaetz's remarks was shared on X, previously known as Twitter, on Thursday. Gaetz asserted the need to stay in session until a Speaker is elected. While acknowledging that if a candidate cannot secure the necessary votes, the House should move on to the next person, Gaetz strongly expressed his disapproval towards twisting and torturing the Constitution to empower a temporary Speaker.

The Speaker vacancy arose after former Speaker Kevin McCarthy was removed from his role earlier this month. Gaetz was among the eight Republicans who aligned with House Democrats in removing McCarthy. Weeks have passed without a new Speaker being elected, leaving the House grappling with pressing matters such as the Israel-Hamas conflict and a potential government shutdown.

In response to the prolonged Speaker vacancy, some members of the lower chamber have proposed a resolution to grant more power to Rep. McHenry. Rep. Jim Jordan, who recently suffered two failed attempts to become Speaker, reportedly plans to support this resolution. However, dissent within Republican ranks is evident, with fellow staunch conservative Rep. Lauren Boebert openly criticizing the resolution.

Expressing her opposition on X, Rep. Boebert voiced her concerns about a perceived betrayal of the GOP base. She denounced the "plan" being discussed, citing her frustration with politicians cutting deals and issuing sanctimonious statements that the base is expected to accept unquestioningly.

With tensions running high within the Republican Party and the House facing complex challenges, the search for a new Speaker intensifies. As debates over the resolution to empower Rep. McHenry continue, Gaetz remains resolute in his determination to halt the process. The outcome of these discussions will have profound implications for the leadership and direction of the party as it navigates critical issues on the national and international stage.
