Authorities have stated that there is no connection to terrorism, but believe this to be an extreme act of political expression.

According to the Atlanta police, the incident took place on Friday afternoon outside a building that houses various businesses, including the Israeli Consulate. A security guard present at the scene noticed the individual attempting to set themselves ablaze and immediately intervened. Unfortunately, both the protester and the security guard suffered burns in the process and have been hospitalized.

The protester, currently in critical condition, sustained severe burns as a result of their actions. The security guard, on the other hand, suffered burns on their wrist and leg. Despite the alarming nature of the incident, authorities have confirmed that everyone inside the building is safe and there is no immediate threat.

A Palestinian flag, believed to be part of the protest, was found and recovered at the scene by the police. This discovery further strengthens the indication of a political motive behind the act.

Anat Sultan-Dadon, the consul general of Israel to the southeastern U.S., expressed her sadness and condemned the act of self-immolation. She emphasized that the value of human life is paramount and expressed gratitude to the city of Atlanta's law enforcement and first responders for their quick action and commitment to ensuring safety.

While the motive behind the action remains under investigation, this incident highlights the intensity of political sentiments surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. With the protester in critical condition, the focus now turns to their recovery and future legal actions that may be pursued.

As the investigation proceeds, authorities will delve deeper into the circumstances and background that led to this dramatic act of political protest. In the meantime, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of peaceful expression and dialogue in resolving conflicts and grievances.
