According to a recent Monmouth University poll released on Monday, President Biden's approval rating stands at an all-time low of 34%, with 61% of Americans expressing their disapproval of his job performance. This marks a significant decline in public opinion since Biden assumed office nearly three years ago.
The survey revealed that respondents specifically gave the president low marks for his handling of immigration, with only 26% approving of his approach, and inflation, where his approval rating was at 28%. Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute, highlighted that the ongoing rise in post-pandemic inflation has affected Americans' perceptions, overshadowing positive economic indicators touted by the administration.
Murray noted that while partisan factors play a role in how individuals perceive their own financial situations, even within Biden's own Democratic base, there is a desire for him to address their top priorities more effectively.
The approval rating of a president is considered a crucial metric of their performance, influence, and popularity, particularly for incumbents seeking re-election. At 81 years old, Biden will be running for a second term in 2024.
This release of the Monmouth poll follows a recent Wall Street Journal survey where Biden's approval rating hit a previous low of 37%. However, a new Fox News national poll released on Sunday showed a slightly higher approval rating for the president at 43%.
During his initial six months in office, Biden's approval rating ranged from the low to mid-50s. However, starting in August 2021, his numbers began to decline due to criticism of his handling of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan and the surge in COVID-19 cases among the unvaccinated population.
The president's approval rating further deteriorated due to concerns over soaring inflation, which began in the summer of 2021, and the influx of migrants along the southern border with Mexico.
Compared to his three most recent two-term predecessors, former Presidents Clinton, George W. Bush, and Obama, Biden's approval rating is significantly lower at this point in their presidencies when they successfully sought re-election. The only recent president who had similarly negative approval ratings as Biden's current numbers was his predecessor, former President Trump, who was ultimately defeated by Biden in the 2020 election.
Despite recent polls showing Trump gaining an advantage over Biden in potential 2024 rematch surveys, the president dismissed concerns when asked by reporters, stating, "You're reading the wrong polls."
The Monmouth University poll was conducted from November 30 to December 4 and involved telephone interviews with 803 adult Americans. The survey carries a sampling error of plus or minus 4.8 percentage points.
