WASHINGTON - President Joe Biden mistakenly referred to Vice President Kamala Harris as "president" once again at a Monday White House event honoring the Stanley Cup-winning Vegas Golden Knights. This marks the seventh instance of Biden making this error in public appearances, further intensifying concerns regarding his cognitive abilities.
In his welcoming remarks to the 2023 Stanley Cup champion Vegas Golden Knights, Biden, who is set to turn 81 on November 20, stated, "Welcome to the White House, the 2023 Stanley Cup champion Vegas Golden Knights! President Harris is here to make sure we do this the right way."
Vice President Harris, a former California senator and state attorney general, was seated in the front row of the event held in the East Room. The incident once again brings attention to the possibility of Harris assuming the presidency in the event of Biden's resignation, death, or incapacitation while in office.
The repeated mistakes have raised concerns not only among Republicans but also within the Democratic party itself. David Axelrod, the former chief strategist to President Barack Obama, voiced his concerns on Sunday, stating that Biden's remarks in public are causing worry about his mental state. Axelrod emphasized that Biden's projection in front of the camera is a significant concern for Democrats, especially as critics accuse him of being in mental decline.
A recent New York Times poll released on November 5 revealed that 71% of swing-state voters consider Biden as "too old to be an effective president." In comparison, only 39% expressed the same sentiment about former President Donald Trump, who is 77 years old and currently the front-runner for the Republican nomination.
As the oldest-ever president of the United States, Biden, who is seeking a second four-year term next year, faces mounting scrutiny over his mental capacity. The repetition of these missteps raises questions about his ability to carry out the responsibilities of the presidency effectively.
The incidents involving the misnaming of Vice President Harris will undoubtedly fuel debates surrounding Biden's mental acuity, signaling potential challenges as he navigates the remainder of his term and the 2024 election campaign.
