President Joe Biden is poised for a comfortable win in the South Carolina Democratic primary, a crucial step in solidifying his party's nomination process. This marks an important milestone for Biden's campaign, as he aims to empower Black voters who played a pivotal role in reviving his candidacy during the 2020 election.
Biden's strong lead and overwhelming favorability among voters make him the clear front-runner against his challengers, Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips and self-help author Marianne Williamson. However, the process leading up to this primary has been significant and at times contentious, with the Democratic National Committee's decision to replace Iowa with South Carolina as the first state in the primary lineup.
The Republican primary in South Carolina is scheduled for February 24th, adding to the significance of Biden's triumph in the Democratic primary. By emphasizing the importance of voters of color in determining the Democratic presidential nominee, Biden advocated for a calendar that commenced with South Carolina. Although the state tends to lean towards the Republican party, it boasts a substantial Black population, making up 26% of its residents.
Vice President Kamala Harris, during her campaign stop at historically Black South Carolina State in Orangeburg, addressed the significance of the state, saying, "South Carolina, you are the first primary in the nation, and President Biden and I are counting on you." This sentiment was reinforced by recent visits to the state by both President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden.
In the 2020 general election, Black voters accounted for 11% of the national electorate, with a staggering 90% of them supporting Biden, according to AP VoteCast, an extensive survey of that election's voters. This remarkable level of support from the Black community reflects the impact of Biden's campaign in connecting with diverse voter bases.
As President Biden attended an open house at his campaign headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware, on Saturday, he expressed enthusiasm about the ongoing election. He stated, "I'm feeling good about where we are," emphasizing that voters across the country are increasingly focusing on the race, while polling data continues to gain momentum.
With the South Carolina Democratic primary underway, President Biden aims to secure a resounding victory, building on his earlier successes and fostering a sense of momentum for his campaign. The validation obtained from a strong showing in South Carolina will be crucial as Biden continues to appeal to voters across the country in his bid for re-election.
