In a strategic move aimed at countering the stagnating "Bidenomics" messaging, President Biden's campaign is set to intensify its attacks on former President Trump in the coming weeks. Building on the poor performance of the White House's economic message, Biden will deliver a speech at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania on Friday, framing Trump as a threat to democracy.

Valley Forge, with its historical connection to George Washington, serves as the backdrop for Biden's speech, drawing a sharp contrast between Washington's willingness to relinquish power and Trump's attempts to cling to it. Biden's campaign hopes to tap into the symbolism of the location to underscore the dangers posed by Trump's alleged undemocratic actions, as reported by Axios.

Several senior campaign officials have emphasized the significance of this renewed focus on Trump's actions surrounding the January 6th events. Julie Chavez Rodriguez, Biden's campaign manager, pointed out that while MAGA Republicans have embraced the "Big Lie," Biden's camp will not shy away from calling out the falsehoods. "Over the last three years, MAGA Republicans haven't shied away from the Big Lie - they've doubled down," Rodriguez stated in an interview with NBC News.

Although Biden has delivered speeches on the anniversary of January 6th in both 2022 and 2023, he refrained from mentioning Trump on those occasions. However, this Friday's speech is expected to take a different approach, directly linking Trump's actions to the threat against democracy.

To complement this shift in messaging, Biden's campaign has released a new advertisement that squarely focuses on Trump and the events of January 6th. The ad features Biden stressing the importance of safeguarding democracy, declaring, "All of us are being asked right now: What will we do to maintain our democracy? History is watching. The world is watching. And most important, our children and grandchildren will hold us responsible."

The campaign views this ad as a stark reminder of the significance of the upcoming election in determining the fate of American democracy. Julie Chavez Rodriguez underscored the gravity of the moment, stating, "This ad serves as a very real reminder that this election could very well determine the very fate of American democracy," during a press briefing.

The strategic pivot to attacking Trump comes following the underwhelming response to the "Bidenomics" messaging, which struggled to resonate with voters, particularly in the face of rising inflation. The term itself was abandoned in Biden's speeches by the end of November, prompted by criticism from within his own party. A Democratic strategist, speaking anonymously to NBC News, labeled the slogan "Bidenomics" as one of the worst messaging choices imaginable.

In contrast, Trump's campaign is gaining momentum as they head into the Republican primaries. Part of that momentum stems from the ongoing criminal cases against Trump and recent state decisions to remove him from primary ballots.

As President Biden ramps up his attacks on Trump, the political landscape continues to shift, with both campaigns aiming to shape the narrative leading up to crucial elections that could impact the future of American democracy.
