In a recent statement, US President Joe Biden expressed deep concern over the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, warning of the potential for a direct confrontation with Russia. These remarks follow Russia's extensive aerial assault on Ukraine, resulting in significant civilian casualties and damage.

The attack, reported by Ukrainian officials and cited by Reuters, marks the largest aerial assault by Russia on Ukraine since the conflict began. Approximately 110 missiles were launched, targeting various civilian structures, including hospitals and a shopping center. Tragically, at least 31 people have been reported dead, with over 120 injuries sustained.

President Biden underscored the gravity of the situation, stating, "Overnight, Russia launched its largest aerial assault on Ukraine since this war began. It is a stark reminder to the world that Putin's objective remains unchanged. He seeks to obliterate Ukraine and subjugate its people. He must be stopped."

The conflict in Ukraine has now spanned 22 months, exacerbating tensions between Russia and NATO members who have been providing substantial military aid to support Ukraine. However, there has been growing hesitancy, particularly among Republican lawmakers in the US, regarding continuing this support. Additional funding for Ukraine has been stalled, with Republican lawmakers insisting on a broader deal that includes increased aid for America's immigration system.

Highlighting the impact of US support, President Biden noted that Ukrainian forces were able to intercept several of the missiles and drones launched by Russia, thanks to the air defense systems provided by the US. However, he warned that urgent congressional action was required to ensure the continuation of arms supply and essential air defense systems to Ukraine.

President Biden has previously cautioned Republicans that withholding aid to Ukraine could pose a security threat not only to NATO but also to the United States. In response to this critical situation, the White House has recently announced a final aid package for Ukraine, totaling $250 million.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine, coupled with Russia's relentless aerial assault, has sharpened international concerns. With President Biden calling for action and urging unity, the spotlight now rests on Congress to swiftly address the issue and ensure that Ukraine receives the necessary support to defend itself against Russian aggression. The world watches with bated breath as negotiations unfold and the fate of Ukraine hangs in the balance.
