In a statement released on Monday, President Joe Biden expressed his firm opposition to the Republican-controlled House's efforts to impeach Homeland Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, labeling the move as an "unprecedented and unconstitutional" attack. The statement, obtained by NBC News, highlights Biden's belief that impeaching Mayorkas would only hinder progress in securing the southern U.S. border, rather than addressing the real challenges at hand.

The impeachment resolution against Mayorkas is scheduled for a vote on Tuesday, as confirmed by a GOP leadership aide. The House Rules Committee is set to convene on Monday afternoon to advance the measure. However, Biden's forceful condemnation may sway some lawmakers to reconsider their support for the impeachment.

Biden emphasized Mayorkas' long-standing career in public service, citing his tenure as a U.S. Attorney and Deputy Secretary before assuming the role of Homeland Security Secretary. The President applauded Mayorkas for upholding the rule of law and showcasing a deep commitment to the nation's core values. In Biden's view, impeaching Mayorkas would not only be unprecedented but also an unconstitutional act of political retribution that fails to address the border security challenges that the nation faces.

Republicans argue that the impeachment hearings are necessary due to the significant increase in illegal border crossings and drug trafficking along the southern U.S. border under Mayorkas' leadership. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene attempted twice last year to force an impeachment vote against Mayorkas. However, Biden countered this argument, stating that impeachment should not be used as a means for an opposing political party to harass executive branch officials over policy disagreements.

In his statement, Biden criticized the impeachment case against Mayorkas as "baseless" and reiterated his administration's commitment to working with Congress to find comprehensive solutions to secure the border and address the challenges posed by record-high numbers of crossings. While hard-line Republicans have expressed skepticism towards a newly proposed border bill, some of their colleagues are pushing for legislation to tackle the ongoing crisis.

Biden's stance aligns with the White House's earlier memo, which condemned the impeachment efforts on constitutional grounds. The memo accused Republicans of engaging in extreme, far-right politics, comparing the attempts to remove Mayorkas to previous efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election and impeach President Biden.

If the impeachment resolution were to pass, Mayorkas would become only the second Cabinet secretary in U.S. history to be impeached. However, it remains to be seen whether enough support will materialize to achieve this outcome.

As the House prepares for the impeachment vote, the controversy surrounding Mayorkas's tenure and the broader issue of border security continues to generate intense debate and scrutiny within political circles. The outcome of this impeachment resolution will likely have significant implications for both Mayorkas's future and the ongoing efforts to address the country's border challenges.
