Raleigh, N.C. - Central North Carolina is bracing for heavy rain and strong winds as a dynamic low-pressure system and cold front approach the region on Sunday. The CBS 17 Storm Team has even included the low-end possibility of light snow in their forecast after analyzing Saturday's models.

According to meteorologists with the National Weather Service in Raleigh, the chances of snow are relatively low, but they cannot be ruled out completely. They emphasized that no significant impacts or accumulation are expected.

The forecast models have begun to show a potential changeover to snow as a realistic possibility. Although cold air often struggles to catch up with precipitation in a timely manner, multiple short-term forecast models are indicating the chance of brief snowfall in the region.

The latest North American Model has been the most aggressive, predicting rain to last into the overnight hours and early Monday morning. This extended duration of precipitation provides an opportunity for the rain to transition into snow.

The High Resolution Rapid Refresh model, which is considered more reliable, also suggests the possibility of sleet and snow overnight following the passage of the cold front.

On the other hand, the IBM Graf model primarily indicates rain with a chance of a few ice pellets mixing in to the north.

While the chances of light snow remain low, the CBS 17 Storm Team and the National Weather Service in Raleigh have acknowledged the possibility and have included it as part of the forecast. It is important to note that this scenario rarely plays out, as cold air usually struggles to catch up with precipitation in time.

In addition to the potential for snow, the storm system is expected to bring over 2 inches of beneficial rainfall to many locations, including the Triangle.

As Central North Carolina prepares for severe storms on Sunday, residents are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
