In a historic move, Pope Francis hosted a group of transgender women at a Vatican luncheon as part of the Catholic Church's "World Day of the Poor" last week. The pontiff's close relationship with the transgender women has blossomed during the COVID-19 pandemic, as he provided them with support when they were unable to work. Now, they meet monthly for VIP visits with the pope and receive essential supplies. This gesture signifies a significant shift in the church's attitude towards the transgender community.
The transgender women who attended the luncheon were predominantly sex workers or migrants from Latin America. For many, it was a profound experience, as they felt embraced by the church for the first time. "Before, the church was closed to us. They didn't see us as normal people, they saw us as the devil," expressed Andrea Paola Torres Lopez, a member of the transgender group.
Alongside the transgender women, approximately 1,200 impoverished or homeless individuals were also invited to the luncheon, where they were served a full meal and dessert, inside the papal audience hall. The event aimed to raise awareness about poverty and to provide support to those in need.
The luncheon for transgender women comes at a time when the Vatican released a controversial document addressing gender-identity disorders. This official response to a dubia submitted by Brazilian Bishop Giuseppe Negri outlines specific circumstances under which individuals suffering from gender-identity afflictions can be baptized or act as godparents. The decision was applauded by LGBTQ+ advocates, although the ruling's ambiguity has posed challenges for implementation within the clergy.
Father Brian Graebe, a theologian from the Archdiocese of New York, commended the guidance while also pointing out its deficiencies. He highlighted the need for affirmation of the correct biological pronouns to be used during baptism, expressing hope for further clarity in future documents.
The Catholic Church has traditionally regarded gender ideology and transgender lifestyles as a "grave disorder" that necessitates correction through spiritual and secular therapy. However, Pope Francis's recent actions and the Vatican's inclusive approach signal a more compassionate attitude towards the transgender community.
The luncheon at the Vatican underscores the importance of inclusivity and compassion, regardless of gender identity. With Pope Francis leading the way, the Catholic Church appears to be taking steps towards greater acceptance and understanding of transgender individuals.
