According to a recent poll conducted by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the University of Georgia, former President Donald Trump is leading President Joe Biden in the swing state of Georgia. The survey revealed that among registered voters, Trump holds a 45 percent to 37 percent lead over Biden, with the remaining respondents expressing uncertainty, not planning to vote, or considering other candidates.
The poll, which did not mention potential third-party candidates, also highlighted that approximately 62 percent of respondents had a negative view of Biden's job performance. A slim majority of those surveyed expressed strong disapproval of the incumbent president.
These findings are consistent with Biden's overall low approval ratings, both nationally and in Georgia. The incumbent president ended 2023 with a national job approval rating of 39 percent, as reported by a Gallup poll in December.
It is worth noting that Biden narrowly won Georgia in the 2020 election, becoming the first Democratic presidential candidate to carry the state since 1992. However, his victory was marred by allegations and controversies surrounding the election process. Trump, in particular, tried to pressure Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to "find votes" in Georgia and falsely accused election workers of fraud. Two Georgia election workers even filed a defamation lawsuit against Trump's ally, Rudy Giuliani, last month.
It is important to mention that the survey was conducted before Trump's recent landslide victory in the Iowa caucus. In the caucuses, Trump secured a historic majority, leaving his rivals for the GOP nomination, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, far behind with approximately 20 percent of the vote each.
The poll was conducted from January 3 to January 11 and included 1,007 registered voters. The margin of error for the survey was reported to be plus-or-minus 3.1 percentage points. These results indicate that Trump currently maintains a lead over Biden in Georgia, suggesting a potentially competitive political landscape in the swing state.
