In a recent poll conducted by Emerson College, former President Donald Trump is shown leading President Joe Biden by 2 points in a hypothetical 2024 general election match-up. The results also indicate that Trump's support among young voters has improved.
According to the Emerson College poll, Trump garnered 47 percent of the support, while Biden received 45 percent. The remaining 8 percent of respondents remained undecided. This marks a 2-point increase for Trump compared to the previous poll conducted by Emerson. Biden's support, on the other hand, remained unchanged.
These findings align with other recent polls that have shown a tight race between Biden and Trump or have indicated Trump's lead over Biden in various key swing states. A CNBC All-America Economic Survey poll conducted earlier this week showed Trump leading Biden by 4 points nationwide. Similarly, a Bloomberg/Morning Consult poll of seven key swing states revealed a 4-point lead for Trump over Biden.
Interestingly, the Emerson College poll also highlighted Trump's strong performance among young voters. He leads Biden by around 2 points among 18-to-29-year-olds, with 45.2 percent support compared to Biden's 42.9 percent. Furthermore, Trump enjoys a significant lead of approximately 11 points among 30-to-39-year-olds, polling at 49.6 percent compared to Biden's 38.5 percent.
The poll also asked respondents about a hypothetical match-up between Biden and Senator Mitt Romney, the 2012 GOP presidential nominee who has announced his plans to retire from the Senate. Biden held a substantial lead over Romney among voters under 30, with 50 percent support compared to Romney's 24 percent. This significant margin of victory for Biden aligns closely with his performance among young voters in the 2020 election.
Notably, the youngest age groups were the most likely to be undecided, with 12 percent expressing uncertainty about their preferred candidate between Trump and Biden.
Overall, the poll indicated that Biden's approval rating stands at 42 percent, while 50 percent of respondents disapprove of his job performance. Although his approval rating increased by 1 point compared to last month's poll, his disapproval rating saw a 3-point increase.
Additionally, the poll revealed a close race on the generic congressional ballot for 2024, with roughly 45 percent of respondents saying they would vote for the Democratic candidate, while approximately 44 percent expressed their support for the Republican candidate.
The Emerson College poll was conducted among 1,578 registered voters, comprising 574 Democrats, 559 Republicans, and 445 independents or those with a different party affiliation. The survey, which has a margin of error of 2.4 points, was conducted on October 16-17.
