In a new poll released by political consulting firm Slingshot Strategies, it has been revealed that a majority of Big Apple voters would like Mayor Eric Adams to resign if he is indicted in an ongoing federal investigation regarding his 2021 campaign. Additionally, the survey also indicates that former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who resigned two years ago amidst numerous sexual harassment allegations, would be the top choice to replace Adams should he leave office early.

The survey, conducted from December 1 to December 9, involved 600 voters and showed that 52% of respondents would like Adams to step down if indicted by prosecutors. On the other hand, 38% believe that he should remain in office while the legal process unfolds. It is important to note that neither Adams nor anyone else has been charged with any wrongdoing in the FBI investigation probing potential illegal campaign donations funneled through Turkey.

Interestingly, in the event of a nonpartisan special election, the poll results indicate that Cuomo, who is reportedly contemplating a political comeback, would garner 22% of the vote, making him the top candidate. An additional 36% of respondents remained undecided, while the rest expressed support for other potential candidates.

Furthermore, the poll also assessed the potential outcome under rank-choice voting rules, revealing that Cuomo would secure a resounding victory over candidate Jumaane Williams, with a final runoff tally of 64% to 36%.

These findings come shortly after a separate poll conducted by Quinnipiac University indicated that Mayor Adams' approval rating had plummeted to a mere 28%, marking the lowest rating ever recorded for a New York City mayor in the university's quarter-century history of surveying Big Apple voters.

Deputy Mayor Fabien Levy dismissed Slingshot Strategies' poll results, suggesting that they were driven by political opportunism and aimed at undermining Mayor Adams. Levy emphasized that Adams was elected to fight for working New Yorkers and would continue to do so, no matter the outcome of skewed polls or the actions of political opponents.

As the federal investigation progresses, the public sentiment expressed in these polls may exert significant influence on the political landscape of New York City, ultimately determining the fate of Mayor Adams and potentially paving the way for a comeback by former Governor Cuomo.
