A tragic incident unfolded in Montezuma County on Tuesday morning, as a shooting between police officers and at least one suspect resulted in the death of an officer and a suspect. The timeline of events began around 11:25 AM when a Cortez Police Department officer attempted to stop a vehicle on South Broadway, leading to shots being fired and the officer being injured, as reported by the Montezuma County Sheriff's Office.

Following the altercation, the two suspects quickly fled the scene, heading towards Highway 160-491. It was there that further gunfire was exchanged between the officers and at least one of the suspects. Sadly, one suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was apprehended by law enforcement and taken into custody.

The fallen officer has been identified as Sgt. Michael Moran, a 46-year-old Marine veteran who had served nearly a decade and completed two tours in Iraq before joining the Cortez Police Department in 2012. Sgt. Moran, an esteemed member of the CPD, tragically succumbed to his injuries at a hospital. His courageous commitment to serving and protecting the community will be remembered by all.

As of now, the identities of the suspects remain unknown. The Cortez police have announced that they will be hosting a news conference at 10 AM on Thursday, where more information about the incident is expected to be provided.

This incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers that law enforcement officers face daily while fulfilling their duties to keep communities safe. The Montezuma County community and law enforcement agencies mourn the loss of Sgt. Michael Moran and extend their deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. Our thoughts are also with the injured officer, as we wish them a full and speedy recovery.
