In a recent development in the ongoing dispute over the Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea, the Philippines' coast guard (PCG) has accused China of engaging in "dangerous and blocking" manoeuvres. The incident occurred earlier this month when the PCG vessel, BRP Teresa Magbanua, conducted a nine-day patrol near the disputed shoal.
According to the PCG, during the patrol, four Chinese coast guard (CCG) vessels shadowed the Filipino vessel more than 40 times. Additionally, four Chinese maritime militia vessels were also present near the shoal, further escalating tensions. Scarborough Shoal, located within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone (EEZ), is claimed by both the Philippines and China, making it a highly contested area in Asia and a potential flashpoint for conflicts.
The primary objective of the PCG vessel's patrol was to protect Filipino fishermen from harassment and ensure their safety in their traditional fishing grounds. However, the Chinese vessels allegedly performed risky manoeuvres, crossing the bow of the BRP Teresa Magbanua twice. The PCG criticized the Chinese vessels for disregarding international rules aimed at preventing collisions at sea.
China's territorial claims in the South China Sea have long been a subject of contention. The country asserts almost the entire region as its own, overlapping with the exclusive economic zones of several neighboring countries including the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei. The Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague ruled in 2016 that China's claims lacked a legal basis, a decision that Beijing has consistently rejected.
Responding to the allegations, the Chinese foreign ministry reiterated its sovereignty over Scarborough Shoal. It stated that the Chinese coastguard activities in the area were legal and called on the Philippines to respect China's territorial sovereignty and maritime rights. Moreover, China affirmed its commitment to protecting its territorial sovereignty and maritime interests in accordance with the law.
The incident near Scarborough Shoal highlights the ongoing dispute and rising tensions in the South China Sea. With competing territorial claims and frequent encounters between the navies and coast guards of different countries, the situation remains a cause for concern. Regional stability and adherence to international maritime rules and regulations are crucial to resolving these disputes and preventing further escalation in the area.
