In an exclusive interview with Action News, Parker and Bethel discussed their vision for the Philadelphia Police Department and their plans for addressing crime in the city.

Parker expressed her full support for Bethel, stating, "As the mayor of this city, this police commissioner will have my wholehearted support." The decision to appoint Bethel followed a thorough process that began back in July when informal interviews were held in Parker's backyard.

Bethel, a lifelong Philadelphian, expressed his gratitude for being chosen to lead and execute the mayor's plan. With 29 years of experience in the Philadelphia Police Department, including eight years as Deputy Police Commissioner of Patrol Operations, Bethel brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the role.

One of Bethel's primary concerns is addressing recruitment and morale issues within the department. He plans to thoroughly assess staffing across the city and provide frontline support to officers in the field. Recognizing the sentiments of some officers who feel unappreciated, Bethel intends to champion their cause while also involving the community in building their morale and restoring trust.

Sharrie Williams, the interviewer, raised the important question of restoring a sense of safety to Philadelphia's citizens. Bethel emphasized the need to reset the police department's focus on being effective crime fighters. Acknowledging the long-standing issue of gun violence, Bethel expressed a strong passion for tackling the impact of guns on the community. He emphasized that there would be no tolerance for such violence and highlighted the importance of collective effort and hope in achieving a safer city.

Mayor-elect Cherelle Parker and Kevin Bethel's partnership signals a desire for change and a fresh approach to public safety in Philadelphia. With their combined experience and dedication, they aim to make significant strides in reducing crime and ensuring the well-being of the city's residents.
