OAKLAND, Calif. - The person who tragically lost their life in a double hit-and-run crash on Sunday night in Oakland has been identified by the Alameda County Coroner's office. The crash victim has been identified as 18-year-old Arif Mohammed, a resident of New York City.

The incident occurred on Highway 13, when a Zipcar rental vehicle carrying Mohammed crashed into another vehicle in the southbound lanes, just south of the Lincoln Avenue exit, around 10:30 p.m.

Following the collision, the Zipcar became disabled, leaving Mohammed and another individual stuck on the road. As they exited the vehicle, tragedy struck when Mohammed was struck and fatally injured by a car that swerved in an attempt to avoid the disabled vehicle. Shockingly, the driver of the car that hit Mohammed left the scene, compounding the devastation caused by the series of hit-and-run incidents.

Meanwhile, the driver of the Zipcar miraculously emerged from the crash unharmed. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has not provided any information regarding the vehicles involved in the initial crash or the subsequent hit-and-run incidents.

Law enforcement officials are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident, hoping to gather more information about the cars that fled the scene. It remains unknown whether any surveillance footage, eyewitness testimonies or other forms of evidence will aid in the apprehension of the responsible parties.

The loss of Arif Mohammed's life in this senseless hit-and-run crash has left friends, family, and the community in shock and mourning. His tragic death serves as a painful reminder of the dangers that can arise on our roads, particularly when individuals involved in accidents choose to flee rather than take responsibility for their actions.

The CHP is urging anyone with information about the incident or the identities of the drivers involved to come forward and report it to assist in bringing those responsible to justice.

As investigations continue, Oakland residents are reminded to stay vigilant on the roads and to always prioritize safety to prevent such devastating accidents from occurring in the future.
