At least 18 people, mostly passengers, suffered minor injuries when a partial train derailment occurred on the Upper West Side on Thursday afternoon. The incident, which took place just north of the 96th Street station around 3 p.m., involved the first car of a 1 train making contact with a work train, resulting in the derailment.

Officials described the incident as a slow speed, minor derailment that happened as the subway train was departing the station. Emergency services promptly responded to the scene, where the injured passengers were promptly treated. The conductor of the derailed train was also being treated for a minor injury.

Eyewitnesses on board the train reported a terrifying experience, with passengers screaming and expressing fear upon the impact. However, despite the initial panic, passengers described the situation as relatively calm, thanks to the assistance provided by the fire department. The doors of the train were broken to facilitate the safe evacuation of passengers.

The consequences of the incident have led to significant disruptions to subway services throughout the city. As a result, 1 train service has been suspended in both directions between South Ferry and 137 St-City College. Additionally, the No 2 train is not operational between 110 St and Borough Hall, with extremely limited service available between the Bronx and Harlem. Riders can access the majority of the 2 trains by way of the 5 train between 149 St-Grand Concourse and Nevins St.

Furthermore, many northbound 3 trains now terminate at either Wall St or Chambers St, as there is currently no 3 train service available between 42 St and 148 St. For those traveling on the 4 and 5 trains, expect local stops in both directions in Brooklyn and delays in service.

The impact from the partial derailment and subsequent service disruptions is likely to cause inconvenience for commuters across the city as authorities work to resolve the situation and restore normal subway operations.
