In a tragic incident that has shocked the community of Covington, Kentucky, a 2-year-old boy named Khalil Adams lost his life when his 3-year-old brother gained access to a loaded gun and accidentally shot him. Both parents were arrested and charged with manslaughter in connection to the incident.
Selena Farrell, the mother of the two boys, made her first court appearance via video arraignment from the Kenton County Jail. She pleaded not guilty to the charges against her. According to court records, the incident occurred on Monday afternoon in their Latonia home when the 3-year-old somehow obtained the weapon and tragically shot his younger brother. Farrell was also charged with leaving the gun within reach of the small child.
In addition to manslaughter, Farrell, 23, faces multiple charges including possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, abandonment of a minor, and a probation violation for a prior felony offense. She is scheduled to return to court next week for her probation violation hearing and then again for the new charges.
The father of the 2-year-old, Teshaun Adams, 21, was apprehended with Farrell in a Boone County hotel room. He was later charged with manslaughter and hindering prosecution. Adams is currently held at the Boone County Jail and will be transferred to the Kenton County Jail for his upcoming court appearance. He made a brief appearance in a Boone County courtroom and is set to return on February 15. His bond is set at $25,000.
A third suspect, Jeremiah Thomas, 20, was also arrested for allegedly assisting in hiding Farrell in the hotel room. Thomas, a resident of Elsmere, was booked into the Boone County Jail on a charge of hindering prosecution but was released on his own recognizance. He has a court date scheduled for February 8.
According to Covington police, they responded to a report of a child shot on Monday near the Skyline Apartments. Upon arriving at the scene, Teshaun Adams emerged carrying Khalil, who had sustained a gunshot wound to the chest. Despite efforts by officers to render aid, Khalil was ultimately pronounced dead upon arrival at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.
The investigation revealed that Farrell had fled the scene before the police arrived and did not appear at the hospital. She later explained to the authorities that she ran away due to an existing warrant for a probation violation. Teshaun Adams recounted that he was sleeping with Farrell in the living room when they heard the gunshot. The two boys were sleeping nearby on a couch.
During the forensic interview of the 3-year-old brother, he admitted to retrieving the gun from a drawer after waking up to watch TV and accidentally shooting Khalil. The court record states that police believe both parents failed to protect Khalil from their 3-year-old when the loaded handgun was within his reach.
Farrell revealed to the police that she had purchased the gun before her felony conviction but had given it to Adams. Authorities are currently seeking records from Kentucky's children's services to determine if there had been prior intervention or cases related to the care and well-being of the young boys.
The tragic death of 2-year-old Khalil Adams is a heartbreaking reminder of the importance of responsible firearm storage and child safety. The community of Covington mourns the loss of a young life, while the legal process unfolds to determine the accountability of the parents involved.
