In a swift and effective response, Pakistani troops successfully foiled an attack on an air force training base, resulting in the deaths of nine attackers, according to Pakistan's military. The incident took place in the Mianwali area of central Pakistan.
The military issued a statement praising the troops for preventing the attack and ensuring the safety and security of personnel and assets. Unfortunately, the assault caused damage to three grounded aircraft and a fuel tanker.
The Tehreek-e-Jihad Pakistan (TJP), a newly founded group that has carried out a series of attacks in the country this year, claimed responsibility for the assault. In a statement sent to journalists by its spokesperson, the TJP asserted their involvement in the attack on the air force base.
Pakistan's caretaker Prime Minister, Anwaar ul-Haq Kakar, commended the efforts of the air force in responding to the assault. This attack follows a recent ambush on a military convoy in Baluchistan province, which claimed the lives of 14 soldiers. Additionally, a separate bomb and gun attack on a police vehicle resulted in three fatalities and more than 20 injuries.
The surge in violence has been attributed to armed groups such as the TJP and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), an outlawed group with ideological ties to the Afghan Taliban. In August alone, Pakistan witnessed an alarming increase in armed attacks, with 99 incidents reported across the country - the highest number in any single month since November 2014, according to the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies.
Historically, the tribal regions of Pakistan along the Afghan border have served as safe havens for armed groups. However, in recent years, the Pakistani army launched massive operations against these groups following the heinous attack on an army-run school in 2014, which claimed the lives of over 150 people, mostly children. As a result, the tribal regions were converted into fully controlled districts, and the military declared that they had eradicated both local and foreign fighters from the area. Despite these efforts, sporadic attacks like the one on the air force base still occur.
