The death toll continues to rise after a tragic oil tanker explosion in central Liberia. According to the country's chief medical officer, the number of fatalities has now exceeded 40 as a result of the devastating blast. The incident occurred when a tanker carrying gasoline crashed and toppled into a ditch along a road in Totota, located approximately 130 kilometers (80 miles) from Liberia's capital city, Monrovia.

President George Weah expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families affected by the tragedy. In a statement released by the presidency, it was confirmed that more than 40 deaths have been recorded so far, following the accident and subsequent explosion of the fuel-loaded tanker.

Reports suggest that locals in the area attempted to collect the contents of the trapped tanker before the explosion occurred. "There were lots of people that got burned," remarked Prince B. Mulbah, deputy inspector general for the Liberia national police. Another police officer, Malvin Sackor, revealed that after the crash, some residents started collecting leaking petrol, inadvertently leading to the catastrophic tanker explosion. This explosion claimed the lives of several individuals and left others with severe injuries.

Eyewitnesses at the scene described a chaotic scene, with people climbing on top of the truck, hitting it with irons in an attempt to burst it and collect the spilling gas. Aaron Massaquoi, speaking to AFP, stated that the driver of the truck warned them not to climb on top of the tanker or damage it. However, some individuals even resorted to using screwdrivers to create holes in the tank, resulting in the tragic explosion.

Dr. Francis Kateh, Liberia's chief medical officer, reported that numerous individuals suffered severe burns in the incident. Hospitals have been inundated with dozens of injured victims who were promptly transported for medical attention, as confirmed by the presidential statement.

President Weah has pledged his full support to health authorities, who are working tirelessly to save lives. The statement further noted that additional manpower and equipment will be provided as required to enhance the ongoing rescue efforts.

The aftermath of this catastrophic gas tanker blast has left Liberia mourning the loss of over 40 lives. As investigations continue into the exact cause of the accident, authorities are urging residents to exercise caution and prioritize safety during similar incidents.
