PARIS, Dec 2 (Reuters) - A violent incident near the Eiffel Tower in central Paris has left one person dead and another injured, according to French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin.
The attack took place on Saturday near the Quai de Grenelle, as an assailant targeted unsuspecting passersby. The police swiftly intervened and arrested the assailant, bringing the situation under control. The injured individual received immediate medical attention from the Paris fire brigade.
"The assailant was neutralised very quickly by police. We tried to save the life of this man. It's a man who died and they were tourists," said Dr Patrick Pelloux in an interview with BFM TV.
The identity of the deceased victim was revealed to be a German national, as reported by BFM, and the weapon used in the attack was a hammer.
This incident, occurring less than eight months before the city is set to host the Olympic Games, raises concerns about security measures for the upcoming global sporting event.
The French police have responded promptly by securing access to the Bir-Hakeim bridge, a nearby landmark. Heightened security measures are expected in the area as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The Interior Minister urged the public to avoid the affected area and remain vigilant. Details on the motives behind the attack and any potential links to terrorism are yet to be disclosed.
Enhanced security will likely be a key focus for the organizers and authorities as they work towards ensuring the safety of participants and visitors during the upcoming Olympic Games.
