In a shocking turn of events, dash camera footage released by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol captures the terrifying moment when a trooper conducting a traffic stop was struck by another vehicle. The incident occurred on Thursday along I-40 at Cimarron Road. The harrowing video shows Trooper Jesse Gregory speaking to the driver of a stopped vehicle when a car crashes into them without warning.
The impact sent Trooper Gregory flying, rolling along the ground before miraculously getting up and running out of frame. The collision also knocked the stopped vehicle aside, while the other car flipped over several times. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol described the video as a stark reminder of the consequences of distracted or impaired driving and emphasized the importance of the "slow down, move over" law.
Fortunately, all three individuals involved in the incident, including Trooper Gregory, were treated and released from the hospital. The Highway Patrol investigators are currently examining the cause of the crash, and their investigation remains ongoing.
Trooper Gregory, in an interview with KWTV, admitted that he couldn't recall the moment he managed to regain his feet after being thrown from his vehicle. He credited divine intervention for his survival and expressed gratitude that no one suffered life-threatening injuries. Trooper Gregory even displayed a scratch on his left forearm as evidence of the ordeal.
This unnerving incident is not Trooper Gregory's first brush with danger this year. Earlier in January, he witnessed a driver collide with a Canadian County Sheriff's deputy during another traffic stop. Trooper Gregory had rushed to the scene, showing concern for Deputy Jose Tayahua-Mendoza, who had been hit in a similar situation.
Both incidents occurred within the same county, mere miles apart, raising concerns about the safety of law enforcement officers. Investigations into both crashes are ongoing.
In the previous case, the vehicle rapidly veered off the highway, sideswiping Deputy Mendoza's truck and striking the stopped car. The impact was so forceful that the vehicle broke through the highway sound barrier wall. Deputy Mendoza, who now resides in a long-term rehabilitation facility, survived the crash but requires ongoing medical care.
It is worth noting that the driver initially stopped by Deputy Mendoza is the son of Oklahoma Senate President Pro Tempore Greg Treat. In a statement to KWTV, Treat expressed gratitude to first responders and medical staff and confirmed that his son was released from the hospital on Wednesday following a serious and potentially life-threatening accident.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol referred to the tragic death of Trooper Nicholas Dees in January 2015 as they emphasized the dangers faced by law enforcement officers. Trooper Dees lost his life when a driver, failing to yield to their warning lights, collided with him and another trooper at a collision scene. The driver was subsequently convicted of first-degree manslaughter and received a suspended sentence.
With two troopers narrowly escaping devastating accidents within a month, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol is pushing for increased awareness of road safety and the importance of following traffic laws. As the investigations into these incidents continue, the hope is that lessons will be learned, and actions will be taken to prevent further tragedies.
