An off-duty Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office detention deputy was tragically killed in an overnight shooting at a south Jefferson County apartment complex. The victim has been identified as Juan Tierney Hall, a 42-year-old longtime detention deputy who regularly worked at the courthouse.
The incident occurred just before 10 p.m. on Wednesday when Hoover police and Jefferson County deputies responded to a report of a shooting at The Lory of Hoover, formerly Emerald Pointe Apartments, located off Old Rocky Ridge Road. Upon arrival, authorities discovered Hall and a 33-year-old man with gunshot wounds.
Both individuals were immediately transported to UAB Hospital for medical treatment, where Hall was unfortunately pronounced dead at 11:44 p.m. The injuries sustained by the other man are believed to be non-life-threatening.
According to Sheriff's Lt. Joni Money, the 33-year-old man heard a knock at his door and proceeded to open it. To his surprise, Hall was standing at the door of a nearby apartment, belonging to one of the complex's buildings on the first or second floor. Without warning, Hall began firing shots, striking the man. In a desperate act of self-defense, the injured victim retrieved a firearm and returned fire.
Hall was hit in the head and attempted to flee but eventually collapsed in a grassy area nearby. Law enforcement marked several shell casings found in the grassy area behind the apartment's patio. The wounded 33-year-old then dialed 911 to report the shooting.
Authorities have not disclosed any potential motive behind this tragic incident, nor have they indicated whether the two men were acquainted with one another. The investigation is currently ongoing under the jurisdiction of Jefferson County deputies.
With this unfortunate incident, Hall's death marks the 186th homicide in Jefferson County this year, emphasizing the urgent need for addressing violence within the community.
As this news unfolds, authorities will continue to pursue justice and provide updates on the investigation as more information becomes available.
