An Oakland police officer was tragically killed while on duty in the early morning hours of Friday, according to authorities. The devastating news was shared by the Oakland Police Department on social media, expressing the deep sorrow felt by the entire department.

The incident occurred around 4:45 a.m. in the 400 block of Embarcadero, although specific details surrounding the shooting were not provided by the police. The officer was swiftly transported to Highland Hospital, but unfortunately, they were later pronounced dead.

No further information regarding the identity of the slain officer has been disclosed at this time. This unfortunate incident marks the 54th officer killed in the line of duty in Oakland.

The shooting prompted a significant law enforcement presence near Jack London Square. The last time an Oakland police officer lost their life while on duty was in 2009 when four officers were killed during a confrontation with a wanted parolee after a routine traffic stop.

As the crime scene unfolded in Oakland, surrounding streets were closed off to the public. Traffic diversions and closures were put in place, affecting northbound Interstate 880 and the southbound 16th Avenue off-ramps. The immediate area around the scene was cordoned off with yellow tape, encompassing a white truck with shattered windows and deployed airbags.

Meanwhile, Highland Hospital in Oakland was surrounded by numerous officers, ensuring the safety and security of the facility. An OPD helicopter continuously circled the Embarcadero area throughout the morning, assisting in the investigation.

Further updates and details regarding the shooting are expected to be provided by the Oakland Police Department during an afternoon press conference. This tragic incident serves as a somber reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers who tirelessly work to protect and serve their communities.
