New York City Mayor Eric Adams made a trip to Washington, D.C., to seek additional federal funds to address the ongoing migrant crisis in the city. The mayor, known for his flashy accessories, sported a $35 Amazon wristwatch as he filmed himself flying in coach to meet with members of the Biden administration.
Adams had initially planned to visit DC last month but had to cut his trip short after the FBI raided the home of his top fundraising adviser, Brianna Suggs, as part of an investigation into an alleged kickback scheme. Now, determined to secure more funding, the mayor emphasized the urgent need for assistance, as the city has been overwhelmed by a recent influx of 3,600 migrants with limited housing options available.
In the video footage, Adams showcased his modest attire, including a collar pin, a monogrammed shirt with his initials "EAL," and engraved cufflinks. His choice of a $35 Amazon wristwatch, believed to be the Benyar By-5114m, stood in stark contrast to his typically lavish lifestyle.
The mayor's latest trip comes as New York City grapples with both a housing crisis and a surge in migrant arrivals. Since the spring of 2022, over 150,100 migrants have arrived in the city, prompting Adams to declare a state of emergency and estimate a cost of approximately $12 billion over the next three years.
Expressing his frustration, Adams reiterated his call for federal assistance, stating, "New Yorkers are angry. I'm angry. I know that we should not be using our tax dollars on a national problem." He has been vocal in his criticism of President Biden, accusing the administration of failing to adequately address the crisis.
To accommodate the growing number of migrants, the city has repurposed hotels, school gyms, and office buildings as emergency housing. In some cases, migrants have been placed in tent cities on Randall's Island. The pressure on New York City has been intensified by Texas, which has spent $86.1 million to transport migrants to self-declared sanctuary cities, including New York, at a cost of $1,650 per migrant.
During his visit to DC, Adams is set to meet with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell. This visit comes after his previous trip was abruptly canceled when the FBI raided Suggs' home. The ongoing investigation into Adams' campaign finances has yet to yield any charges against the mayor or his campaign team.
As the city continues to grapple with the multifaceted challenges posed by the migrant crisis, Adams is determined to secure the necessary resources to support the affected population.
