The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is launching an investigation into two separate vehicle-train collisions that occurred at the same high-speed rail crossing in Florida this week, resulting in the unfortunate deaths of three individuals.
The first incident took place on Friday when a Brightline train collided with a Chevrolet Avalanche pickup truck, claiming the lives of both the driver and passenger, according to the Melbourne police. Reports suggest that the vehicle attempted to outrun the approaching train, leading to the fatal collision.
Just two days earlier, a Brightline train collided with a Honda Element SUV at the same crossing, resulting in the death of the driver and injuries to three others, as reported by the police. Surveillance footage obtained by ABC Miami affiliate WPLG revealed that the SUV blatantly disregarded the crossing arm and flashing lights before the collision occurred.
Both of these tragic crashes are currently under investigation. The NTSB has announced that they will be sending a team to conduct a safety investigation specifically into the "fatal grade crossing crash" that occurred on Friday. This investigation will also include the examination of the previous incident that took place on Wednesday.
The NTSB aims to better understand the safety issues at this particular crossing and explore potential methods to prevent or mitigate similar accidents in the future. Their team of investigators arrived on-site promptly on Saturday and will spend several days collecting perishable information and documenting the scene.
In response to the recent collision, Melbourne Mayor Paul Alfrey emphasized the importance of following safety measures at train crossings and issued a plea to drivers, stating, "When the arm is down, don't go around!" He further expressed plans to collaborate with Brightline officials to enhance public safety campaigns and potentially implement additional safety measures like improved barriers.
Brightline, Florida's high-speed rail service that started operating between Miami and Orlando in late September, has unfortunately witnessed other fatal incidents in Melbourne since its launch. Two pedestrians lost their lives in separate accidents that occurred on October 19 and December 24 near Aurora Road and Cypress Avenue, respectively.
The introduction of Brightline has significantly increased train traffic in Melbourne, prompting the need for heightened vigilance and adherence to safety precautions. Mayor Alfrey stressed the necessity of prioritizing safety for both drivers and passengers in light of the increased train activity.
ABC News reached out to Brightline for comment on this week's collisions but has yet to receive a response. The rail company previously conducted a public safety campaign prior to the launch of its service, given the additional train traffic brought by the new high-speed rail route in Melbourne.
As the investigation continues and the NTSB analyzes the data collected, it is hoped that valuable insights will be gained that can ultimately contribute to improved safety measures at the high-speed rail crossing, ensuring the avoidance of further tragedies in the future.
