Parts of northern New England experienced significant snowfall overnight, with some areas receiving up to a foot of snow. While the storm brought only rain to most of the Greater Boston region, hundreds of schools were forced to close as a result, and over 40,000 customers were left without electricity.
Among the hardest-hit areas was Greensboro, Vermont, which received a whopping 12.3 inches of snow. Other regions of northern Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine also saw substantial snow accumulation, ranging between 11 and 12 inches. In contrast, southern areas of these states received a more modest amount of snowfall, ranging from 1 to 3 inches.
The arrival of the winter season brought excitement for many, including ski enthusiasts. Numerous New England ski areas were delighted by the heavy snowfall, with resorts such as Maine's Sunday River, New Hampshire's Loon Mountain, and Smugglers' Notch in Vermont reporting ample snow coverage.
As a result of the inclement weather, schools across the three northern New England states were forced to close their doors, ensuring the safety of students and staff. Alongside school closures, power outages were also reported. In Maine alone, 25,000 customers woke up without electricity on Monday morning, while Vermont and New Hampshire experienced outages affecting 11,000 and 6,000 customers, respectively. However, by Monday afternoon, the total number of outages across the three states had decreased to around 25,000.
In contrast, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island predominantly experienced a rain event, avoiding the heavy snowfall witnessed in the northern regions of New England.
The National Weather Service has provided an overview of the snow totals across the region, highlighting the significant snowfall received in northern areas. With this unexpected winter weather, residents are reminded to exercise caution when navigating the snowy roads and to stay informed regarding any school closures or power outages in their respective areas.
