In the heated race for governor in North Carolina, two Republican candidates have publicly criticized the front-runner, Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, for his controversial remarks regarding transgender individuals and restroom usage. Both candidates, state Treasurer Dale Folwell and attorney Bill Graham, have voiced their concerns about Robinson's divisive comments, expressing their disapproval of his stances.

Robinson's remarks were made during a campaign event, where he suggested that transgender women should be arrested if they use women's restrooms. He emphasized his commitment to defending women in the state, stating that individuals experiencing a gender identity transition should be apprehended if they attempt to enter women's restrooms. His words elicited a strong reaction from the audience present at the event in Cary.

During another campaign event in Greenville, Robinson went on to address those who may be struggling with their gender identity. He suggested that they should find a private place outdoors to use the restroom, rather than causing societal disruption. It is worth noting that North Carolina had previously repealed the controversial "bathroom bill," or HB 2, which prohibited transgender individuals from using restrooms and changing facilities that aligned with their gender identities.

Folwell, one of Robinson's opponents, condemned his comments, labeling them as hate-driven and arguing that such behavior is not conducive to the betterment of North Carolina or the Republican party. Folwell recommended that Robinson resign if he truly cared about the state or the party's interests. Highlighting Robinson's absence during Senate sessions, Folwell suggested that he show up more frequently if he desired to shape legislation according to his preferences.

Graham's spokesperson, Alex Baltzegar, also criticized Robinson's remarks, predicting that if he were to become the nominee, it would negatively impact all Republican candidates. Baltzegar pointed to Robinson's previous controversial statements, including denying the Holocaust and making demeaning comments about women. Baltzegar argued that these remarks would hinder the GOP's chance of regaining the White House and the North Carolina governorship.

Robinson has faced ongoing criticism for his views on various issues, including LGBTQ rights. In 2021, he drew backlash after referring to LGBTQ people as "filth" in a video shared by a progressive advocacy group. Although a spokesperson for Robinson claimed his comments were related to the discussion of these topics in public education, multiple North Carolina representatives called for his resignation.

Robinson has previously downplayed his comments about Jews and the Holocaust, stating that certain Facebook posts were poorly worded. He denied any allegations of antisemitism during a news conference, reiterating that he did not harbor such beliefs.

As the race for the governor's seat escalates, it remains to be seen how Robinson's controversial comments and their subsequent backlash will impact his campaign. Despite facing criticism from within his own party, Robinson has yet to respond to these recent condemnations.
