Honolulu, Hawaii - A newborn baby was rescued from a trash bin in Kahala by a concerned resident on Saturday night, prompting the opening of a child abandonment case by the Honolulu police. The baby was rushed to Kapiolani Medical Center in serious condition, according to officials from Honolulu EMS.
The incident took place at approximately 11:30 p.m. when a vigilant Kahala resident heard a woman's distressful screams outside his home. Realizing the woman was in labor, he immediately called 911 for assistance. The man later discovered a newborn baby girl in a nearby trash bin after witnessing the unidentified woman leave the scene.
Upon arrival at the hospital, medical professionals quickly attended to the infant's needs. The baby's condition remains serious, and medical staff are administering the necessary care and attention she requires.
Local residents expressed their shock and concern upon hearing the news of the abandoned baby. Christen Tominaga, a resident in the area, voiced her empathy, stating, "Hearing about it is heartbreaking, really. Just knowing that that's a helpless little one, but I'm glad somebody found the baby. Hopefully, it's getting all the care and love it needs right now."
Hawaii's Child Welfare Services hotline urges individuals to reach out for assistance whenever they suspect a child's safety may be at risk. The hotline provides resources available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Any individual concerned about child abuse or neglect can report their suspicions by calling 1-888-380-3088.
The Honolulu police are actively investigating the child abandonment case, gathering information from witnesses and examining any potential evidence that may lead to the identification of the person responsible for abandoning the newborn.
