The plaintiff, who worked for the City of New York at the time, alleges that the assault took place in New York City. The claims include sexual assault, battery, employment discrimination, retaliation, hostile work environment, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

A spokesperson from City Hall stated that the mayor does not know the accuser and has no recollection of ever meeting them. The spokesperson vehemently denies any physical harm caused by Mayor Adams and emphasized his denial of the claim.

The lawsuit also names the City of New York, the New York Police Department's Transit Bureau, and the New York City Police Department Guardians Association as defendants. No further details were provided in the summons, and a formal complaint has not yet been filed.

The allegations against Mayor Adams fall under the purview of New York's Adult Survivors Act, which is set to expire after Thanksgiving. Enacted in May 2022, the law created a one-year lookback window for adult survivors of sexual offenses to pursue legal action, even if the statute of limitations on their claims had already expired. This provision acknowledges the fact that many survivors of sexual abuse may take years before publicly disclosing their trauma, granting them an opportunity to seek justice.

The summons states that the claims allege intentional and negligent acts and omissions that caused physical, psychological, and other injuries as a result of behavior that would be classified as sexual offenses.

At present, the legal department of the city and the New York Police Department have referred inquiries to City Hall. CNN has also reached out to the New York City Police Department Guardians Association for further comment.

As the case develops, it remains to be seen how Mayor Adams and the other defendants will respond to the allegations lodged against them. The outcome of the lawsuit could have significant implications, not only for Mayor Adams but also for the city and its law enforcement agencies involved in the case.
