In an interview appearance on NBC News' Meet the Press, New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu aimed a dig at the size of the crowd at former President Donald Trump's rally held on Saturday night before the state's primary election. Sununu, who has been critical of Trump and endorsed former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley's presidential run, sarcastically commented on the rally, claiming that half of the stadium had to be curtained off to avoid it looking empty.
Contrary to Sununu's remarks, Trump supporters took to social media to express their enthusiasm and delight at the crowd size and energy of the rally, which took place at Southern New Hampshire University's arena in Manchester. Clare Lopez, a board member of the Citizens Commission on National Security, tweeted, "No one in America today gets this kind of enthusiasm from this size crowd as President Donald Trump does, rally after rally, all over the country." The conservative columnist, Elad Hakim, also observed, "Judging from the size of the crowd at the rally yesterday, it is safe to say that Trump still has tremendous clout!"
The Southern New Hampshire University Arena, where the rally was held, has a capacity of about 12,000 for centerstage concerts, as noted on the venue's homepage. Reports stated that some Trump supporters were turned away from the event after it reached capacity just after 6 p.m., further indicating the popularity of the rally. However, the exact attendance figures for the event have yet to be released.
In the same vein, a recent New Hampshire poll published on Sunday highlighted Trump's lead of 11 points over Haley in the Granite State. This is a significant shift from an early January poll conducted by CNN/University of New Hampshire, which showed Haley only trailing Trump by 7 points. Pundits suggest that Haley must maintain a single-digit margin against Trump in New Hampshire before the primary shifts to her home state of South Carolina.
Unfortunately for Haley, recent polling averages from RealClearPolitics indicate that she faces an uphill battle in South Carolina. The averages show Trump leading with 52 percent, while Haley holds 21.8 percent support. Dr. Scott Huffmon, director of The Winthrop Poll initiative at Winthrop University in South Carolina, mentioned that Haley needs to have a remarkable showing in New Hampshire and stay within single digits to solidify her position. He noted that although Haley is popular in South Carolina and possesses high favorability ratings, many of her supporters still want Donald Trump to be president again.
At the rally, Trump was joined by South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster, along with several other prominent state politicians. Trump proudly declared, "Almost every politician from South Carolina is endorsing me," as he addressed the crowd. Meanwhile, Sununu commended Haley's ground game and her unique approach to reaching every voter in the state, setting her apart from her Republican rivals in the final 72 hours leading up to the primary election.
As the primary election in New Hampshire draws closer, all eyes are on the Trump rally and the response it received. While Governor Sununu dismissively mocked the event's crowd size, Trump supporters continue to express their unwavering enthusiasm for the former president. The outcome of the primary will ultimately reveal the impact of Saturday night's rally and the decisions of New Hampshire voters.
