Respiratory illnesses are on the rise in New Hampshire, prompting concerns among residents about the need for vaccinations to protect themselves. State epidemiologist Dr. Benjamin Chan acknowledges that this is the peak season for respiratory illnesses, including RSV, COVID-19, and influenza. However, he assures the public that there are available immunizations that can effectively safeguard against these viruses and prevent severe infections and diseases.

Dr. Chan emphasizes that vaccines are accessible for all three illnesses, and there is still time to get vaccinated before the peak season hits. Nevertheless, opinions on the matter of vaccinations remain divided among Granite Staters.

Paul Romano, a resident, emphasizes the importance of getting vaccinated against the flu, stating that it is prevalent and urges others to take the same proactive approach. On the other hand, Carol Gerlach, who is visiting from Wisconsin, expresses concerns about the safety of vaccines. Meanwhile, Deborah Constant of Nashua firmly believes in vaccinations and urges others to protect themselves to avoid a recurrence of previous epidemics.

Dr. Chan advises individuals to consult with their healthcare providers to determine the suitability of getting vaccinated and to address any questions or concerns they may have. There are up-to-date vaccines available for influenza and COVID-19. For RSV, a recently released vaccine is available, with eligibility criteria varying. People over the age of 60 are eligible, as well as pregnant women who can receive a different vaccine. Additionally, there is a separate immunization specifically designed for infants younger than 8 months old.

Dr. Chan emphasizes that all three viruses pose a serious threat and can lead to severe illness or infection. Therefore, he encourages practicing basic hygiene measures such as frequent handwashing, covering one's cough, and staying home when feeling unwell, in order to minimize the risk of contracting respiratory viruses during the winter season.

As respiratory illnesses continue to surge in New Hampshire, the debate surrounding vaccinations intensifies. While some residents advocate for immunizations as a means of personal protection, others express hesitations concerning their safety. The state epidemiologist emphasizes the importance of engaging in discussions with healthcare providers to make informed decisions about vaccinations. With accessible vaccines available for influenza, COVID-19, and RSV, individuals are encouraged to take proactive measures to protect themselves and prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses.
