In a chilling murder trial in New Hampshire, 34-year-old Adam Montgomery is accused of beating his 5-year-old daughter, Harmony, to death and then allegedly bringing her decomposing body to the restaurant where he worked as a cook and dishwasher, leaving it near food. Montgomery, who refused to attend his trial, reportedly spent months moving his daughter's body to various hiding spots before finally disposing of it.
During the opening of the trial, prosecutors revealed disturbing details of Montgomery's alleged actions. They claimed that he even went so far as to compress Harmony's body into a tote bag, which he brought with him daily to the restaurant where he worked, storing it in a freezer alongside food and ingredients. The bag's presence in the freezer caught the attention of coworkers, who had no idea of its gruesome contents.
Prosecutor Christopher Knowles described how Montgomery had hidden Harmony's body in multiple locations, including a friend's car trunk, a cooler in his mother-in-law's apartment building, a ceiling vent of a homeless shelter where he resided, and an apartment freezer. Eventually, the body was disposed of in an unknown location.
The tragic case took a grim turn as it was revealed that Harmony had gone missing in 2019, but authorities did not become aware of her disappearance or begin searching for the child until two years later. The court was told that Harmony's death came about when her father became enraged over her bathroom accidents in their car. Montgomery then reportedly went for fast food and consumed drugs while ignoring his daughter's cries for help in the backseat of the car.
Prosecutor Knowles emphasized that Montgomery was the only person who knew the location of Harmony's remains and had hoped she would never be found. Knowles also highlighted that Montgomery had recently been sentenced to over 30 years on weapons charges.
Montgomery has pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree murder, abuse of a corpse, falsifying physical evidence, assault, and witness tampering. Facing the possibility of life in prison if convicted, Montgomery's defense team argued that Kayla Montgomery, his estranged wife and Harmony's mother, had fabricated the allegations to protect herself. The defense pointed to a note found in Kayla's jail cell, suggesting her willingness to "betray" her husband in exchange for immunity from all charges.
Kayla Montgomery, who is currently serving an 18-month sentence on perjury charges, is expected to testify against her husband during the trial.
The trial continues as the prosecution presents further evidence and witnesses to establish the case against Adam Montgomery.
