LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- In a shocking courtroom incident on Wednesday, a defendant in a felony battery case launched a violent assault on Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus, sparking a chaotic brawl involving court officials and attorneys.

The incident, captured on courtroom video, shows the defendant, Deobra Delone Redden, leaping over the defense table and the judge's bench, landing on top of Judge Holthus. In the process, an American flag was toppled onto them, as the judge was pulled towards a wall. While Judge Holthus sustained some injuries, she did not require hospitalization, according to courthouse officials.

Redden, facing 13 charges including extortion and coercion with force, had his next court appearance rescheduled for January 9 after refusing to return on Thursday for new charges. Among the new counts are seven charges of battery on a protected person, referring to the judge and the officers who intervened to assist her. The defendant is currently being held on a $54,000 bail.

Multiple court and jail officers, as well as courtroom staff members, had to intervene and physically restrain Redden from the judge, including resorting to punches in the process. Unfortunately, one courtroom marshal sustained a head injury with bleeding gash and a dislocated shoulder, necessitating hospitalization.

Richard Scow, the chief county district attorney, expressed the rapid escalation of events, stating, "It happened so fast it was hard to know what to do." Scow was prosecuting Redden for allegedly attacking an individual with a baseball bat last year.

Redden's sentencing was not immediately rescheduled, and Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson has argued for Redden to be held without bail, citing his history of violent offenses which include three felony convictions and nine misdemeanors. Wolfson emphasized that Redden poses an "extreme danger to the community" and may attempt to flee.

During Wednesday's sentencing hearing, Redden was not restrained or in jail attire as he had been released from custody as part of a deal with prosecutors. He had pleaded guilty in November to a reduced charge of attempted battery resulting in substantial injuries. Initially, Redden had been charged with assault with a deadly weapon for the baseball attack, as per court records.

As the judge signaled her intent to impose a prison sentence and the court marshal moved towards handcuffing Redden, he erupted in expletives and charged forward, prompting screams from those present in the courtroom, including his foster mother.

Records indicate that Redden, a Las Vegas resident, had previously been evaluated and found competent to stand trial in the battery case before pleading guilty to the reduced charge. He also has a prior history of serving time in Nevada prison for a domestic battery conviction.

Judge Holthus, elected to the state court bench in 2018 after a successful career as a prosecutor with over 27 years of experience, experienced this shocking incident in her courtroom.
