Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford announced on Wednesday that felony charges have been filed against six individuals referred to as "fake electors" for their alleged involvement in attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. The defendants, including high-ranking officials from the Nevada Republican Party, are accused of falsely presenting themselves as Nevada's presidential electors after the election.
The charged individuals include Nevada Republican Party Chairman Michael McDonald, Nevada Republican Party National Committeeman Jim DeGraffenreid, Clark County Republican Party Chairman Jesse Law, Storey County Clerk Jim Hindle, as well as Republican operatives Shawn Meehan and Eileen Rice. A grand jury in the Eighth Judicial District Court in Nevada indicted all six defendants.
According to the Nevada Attorney General's office, each defendant faces multiple felony charges, including offering a false instrument for filing, offering a forged instrument, and offering a false instrument titled "Certificate of the Votes of the 2020 Electors from Nevada" to various recipients, including the President of the Senate, the Archivist of the United States, the Nevada Secretary of State, and the United States District Court for the District of Nevada.
Some of the defendants, including McDonald and DeGraffenreid, reportedly testified before a federal grand jury investigating the January 6 Capitol attack. These indictments exemplify the ongoing efforts to hold those involved accountable for undermining the democratic process.
Attorney General Ford, a Democrat, emphasized his commitment to defending democratic institutions, stating, "When the efforts to undermine faith in our democracy began after the 2020 election, I made it clear that I would do everything in my power to defend the institutions of our nation and our state." He expressed confidence in the judicial system and expects justice to be served.
ABC News attempted to reach out to several of the defendants, but McDonald, Law, Hindle, Meehan, and Rice were not immediately available for comment. DeGraffenreid and Law declined to comment.
This is the third such criminal indictment filed by state attorneys general against individuals accused of being "fake electors" in an attempt to overturn the 2020 election results. Previously, three "fake electors" were among the co-defendants charged in a racketeering indictment in Georgia, alongside former President Donald Trump. Additional charges were brought forth in Michigan, where 16 "alternate electors" faced charges of conspiracy to commit forgery.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel charged nine of the 16 "alternate electors" with not guilty pleas, while others, including defendants Kenneth Chesebro, Sidney Powell, Jena Ellis, and Scott Hall, reached plea deals in exchange for testifying against other defendants.
The filing of these charges highlights the ongoing legal actions taken against individuals who allegedly attempted to interfere with and overturn the 2020 presidential election, further underscoring the significance of protecting the integrity of the democratic process.
