Lincoln, Nebraska - Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen faced questions and criticism regarding comments he made about Flatwater Free Press reporter Yanqi Xu's nationality. The governor's remarks were seen as deflecting from an investigative report by Xu, prompting national attention and sparking a debate about the treatment of minorities in the state.
During a recent radio show interview on KFAB, Pillen responded to a question about Xu's investigative report on the environmental impact of his hog farms by stating, "The author is from communist China. What more do you need to know?" When confronted by reporters during a press conference, Governor Pillen remained firm, saying, "My comments are my comments."
The non-profit organization behind Flatwater Free Press, the Nebraska Journalism Trust, called on Governor Pillen to reflect on his comments about Xu. In an editorial, Matt Wynn, the executive director, expressed his frustration and disappointment, labeling the comments as infuriating, saddening, and embarrassing. Wynn emphasized Xu's qualifications and accomplishments as a journalist, highlighting her extensive experience in the field.
Yanqi Xu, hailing from Guangzhou, China, pursued studies in English and international journalism at Beijing before coming to the United States for a master's degree at the University of Missouri-Columbia. She has worked for reputable organizations such as the National Freedom of Information Coalition, served as a radio anchor, and reported for the North Carolina Policy Watch. Xu has been a dedicated reporter for the Flatwater Free Press for two years and recently earned a visa for individuals with extraordinary ability granted by the United States government.
Pillen, however, refused to further discuss the issue, stating that he prefers to focus on the state of Nebraska and advocating for agriculture. Water quality was brought up during the press conference, with the governor stating that it remains a priority for him and will be addressed in the upcoming legislative session. Xu's investigation into elevated nitrate levels in water, exceeding safety standards, has raised concerns about the state's environmental practices.
The controversy surrounding Pillen's comments has ignited a broader conversation about the treatment of minorities in Nebraska. Many have called on the governor to reflect on the impact of his remarks and their potential to make minority groups feel unwelcome in the state. The Flatwater Free Press, as well as other organizations and individuals, have reached out to Pillen's office in hopes of creating a dialogue and fostering understanding.
As the issue continues to garner attention, it remains to be seen how Governor Pillen will respond to the calls for reflection on his comments. The Nebraska Journalism Trust and supporters of the Flatwater Free Press hope that the governor will take the opportunity to address and rectify the situation, reassuring Nebraskans of their commitment to inclusivity and respect for diverse voices in journalism.
