Brussels, November 7 (Reuters) - NATO allies have unanimously condemned Russia's decision to withdraw from the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE), a significant post-Cold War agreement. In response, they have announced the suspension of its operation.

The CFE treaty, which limited certain categories of conventional armed forces, has been a crucial instrument in maintaining Euro-Atlantic security. Russia's formal withdrawal from the treaty, fueled by its concerns over the expansion of the NATO military alliance, has been met with strong criticism from NATO allies.

In a statement, NATO declared, "Allies condemn Russia's decision to withdraw from the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE), and its war of aggression against Ukraine which is contrary to the Treaty's objectives." The alliance further highlighted Russia's actions as a systematic undermining of Euro-Atlantic security.

Consequently, all Allied States Parties have decided to suspend the operation of the CFE Treaty for an indefinite period, exercising their rights under international law. This decision has received full support from all NATO allies.

The United States, one of the leading NATO members, has also announced its intention to suspend treaty obligations effective December 7. White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan emphasized that Russia's actions in its conflict with Ukraine and its withdrawal from the treaty have fundamentally altered the circumstances surrounding it, transforming the participants' obligations.

It should be noted that Russia had already suspended its participation in the treaty in 2007 and ceased active participation in 2015. Despite this, Sullivan reassured that the United States and its allies remain committed to achieving effective conventional arms control, despite Moscow's persistent disregard for arms control agreements.

The suspension of the CFE Treaty comes at a critical juncture for Euro-Atlantic security. NATO allies are determined to address the security concerns arising from Russia's actions, particularly its continued aggression against Ukraine.
