A respiratory illness is causing concern among dog owners across several states as veterinarians struggle to identify the root cause of the sickness. With no known antibiotics effective against the illness, veterinarians are urging caution and vigilance to protect pets while investigations continue.
Dogs affected by this illness are experiencing prolonged respiratory disease and pneumonia, with symptoms including persistent coughing, sneezing, nasal and/or eye discharge, and lethargy. In some cases, the pneumonia progresses rapidly, rendering dogs severely ill within a mere 24 to 36 hours.
The Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) has been inundated with over 200 case reports from veterinarians since mid-August, leaving officials puzzled and concerned. Andrea Cantu-Schomus, communication director with the ODA, stated on November 16 that the number of cases reported across the state is still uncertain, as the exact mortality rate remains unknown.
Close contact with other dogs is believed to be the primary mode of transmission, particularly in crowded spaces such as daycares, dog parks, groomers, and boarding kennels. Furthermore, reports of this illness have emerged from various locations within the state of Oregon.
The ODA has outlined the symptoms associated with this mysterious illness, which include chronic mild to moderate inflammation of the trachea lasting for extended periods, often unresponsive to antimicrobial treatments. Additionally, cases of chronic pneumonia that do not respond adequately to antibiotics have been observed. The most concerning cases involve rapid onset pneumonia, leading to poor outcomes in as little as 24 to 36 hours.
Similar cases of the illness have been reported in other states, as TODAY highlighted. While specific locations were not mentioned, it is clear that the situation is not limited to Oregon alone.
Dog owners are advised to be vigilant and promptly contact their veterinarians if they notice any of the mentioned symptoms in their pets. Taking preventative measures, such as limiting close contact with other dogs and practicing good hygiene, can play a crucial role in safeguarding dogs from the illness.
As veterinarians continue to investigate this respiratory illness, it is crucial for dog owners to remain informed and take necessary precautions to protect their beloved pets.
